Understanding Latency: What It Actually Means for You
"Latency" is one of those terms that gets thrown around a lot, often without much explanation. Here's a clear, provider-neutral breakdown of what it actually is, and why it matters more for some activities than others.
What latency actually measures
Latency is the time it takes for a small piece of data to make a round trip between your device and a server — measured in milliseconds. It's different from speed (bandwidth), which measures how much data can flow at once. You can have a fast connection with high latency, or a slower connection with low latency — they're independent measurements.
When latency matters most
For browsing, streaming, and downloading, latency has a minor effect — your browser or streaming app can buffer ahead. For real-time activities like video calls and competitive gaming, latency is far more noticeable, because there's no buffering to hide delay.
Why this varies so much between satellite providers
Low-earth-orbit networks orbit much closer to the ground than older geostationary systems, which is the main technical reason their latency is dramatically lower. If video calls or gaming are a priority for you, this single spec matters more than almost anything else when comparing providers — and it's one of the first things we check when helping someone choose.
