It starts with a ground terminal
Every satellite internet setup begins with a compact terminal — what most people call "the dish." Its job is narrow but critical: maintain a stable, unobstructed connection to the network overhead. That's why getting the mounting location right matters more than almost anything else in the setup process — tree cover, roofline angles, and seasonal foliage changes all affect signal quality.
Data travels up, then back down
Once connected, your data makes a round trip: from your terminal up to the network, through ground infrastructure that routes traffic across the country, and back down to wherever it needs to go. Newer low-earth-orbit networks (like Starlink) have shrunk this round trip considerably compared to older geostationary systems (like HughesNet and Viasat), which is the main reason their latency and video-call performance differ so much.
